Deadline Wednesday for Community Star nominations

STEUBENVILLE — The search is coming to a close for 10 special people.

When we find them, they will become members of the Class of 2017 of the Community Stars, Presented by Weirton Medical Center.

Nominations continue to be accepted for what has become one of the Tri-State Area’s longest-running recognition programs, but the deadline is only days away. Wednesday to be exact.

Community Stars has the same goal it has had since it was started in 1998 by the Herald-Star and The Weirton Daily Times — to honor the region’s truly unsung heroes, those people who go out of their way to help others, not because they seek recognition or attention, but simply because it is the right thing to do.

“This year’s edition of Community Stars is special,” said Ross Gallabrese, executive editor of the newspapers. “This will be the 20th year we have sponsored the program. Our stars have come from all walks of life and all parts of the Tri-State Area. They’ve touched all parts of our community — they are special people, people you might never read about, persons whose photographs are never in the newspaper. They provide such a vital role in our community, and they deserve recognition.”

Weirton Medical Center once again returns as the presenting sponsor.

“WMC takes great pride in its sponsorship of Community Stars,” said Kelli McCoy, WMC’s director of communications. “We strive to make a difference in the lives of those in this community each day through excellent, state-of-the-art care and compassion. When folks take it upon themselves to reach out and help others, we need to celebrate it because that is what this Ohio Valley is all about.”

The stars will be honored during a dinner scheduled to be held at 6 p.m. Sept. 25 at Froehlich’s Classic Corner, 501 Washington St.

Nominations will be accepted through Wednesday. As always, the criteria is simple — those who are nominated must work to make their community a better place to live. There are no age restrictions — past honorees have ranged from their pre-teens into their 90s — but all nominees must be residents of Jefferson, Harrison, Brooke, Hancock or Washington counties.

A panel that includes staff members and editors of the newspapers will make the final selections.

Profiles of this year’s stars will be published in a keepsake edition that will be included with the Sept. 24 editions of the newspapers. Each honoree will receive a commemorative medallion and a gift card from M&M True Value Hardware.

“Community Stars is one of the area’s premiere recognition programs,” Gallabrese added. “It’s a chance to honor the special people who make a such a big difference in the lives of others. The support of community-minded businesses like Weirton Medical Center and M&M Hardware ensures the evening will continue to be a special event.”

A nomination form appears in today’s newspaper. Nominations can be mailed to Herald-Star and Weirton Daily Times, City Editor Jody Wisbith, Attn: Community Stars, 401 Herald Square, Steubenville, OH 43952. Nominations can be e-mailed to jwisbith@heraldstaronline.com or newsroom@heraldstaronline.com.
