EAST SPRINGFIELD - The Weirton Post 10 Legion baseball team scored as many runs as they had players dressed Thursday against Richmond Post 740.

The shorthanded Post 10 team had just nine in uniform, and nine runs were more than enough for pitcher Brent Pellen in a 9-2 victory.

"Brent Pellen pitched a heck of a game," said Post 10 head coach Bill Magnone. "He did what you want any pitcher to do and that's throw strikes.

"He didn't have many walks, and that's what got him through the game."

Added Post 740 head coach Sam Davis of Pellen, "Give their pitcher credit, he threw strikes and we weren't very patient."

Up 3-0 entering the top of the fifth, Weirton broke the game open with a six-run barrage. John Shaw got things going with a one-out double and was driven home on a Josh Russell single.

Back-to-back walks by Matt Cessna and Ruben Pine loaded the bases. Mitch Viakley and Pellen then reached on consecutive errors by the Richmond third baseman. Russell and Cessna scored when Viakley reached and Pine scored when Pellen reached. Tory Fuscardo then drove in Viakley and Pellen with a double.

All six runs scored with two outs.

"A lot of times two-out RBIs determine the outcome of a game," said Davis. "They got a bunch of them today and I don't know that we had one." Post 740 never threatened after that, picking up only an RBI single from Mark Smyth in the sixth and an RBI single from Phil Hilt in the seventh.

"I'm very proud of the nine that were here," said Magnone. "I think we committed one error. That's good baseball.

"It's nice to get the win, but it's real nice to go out and get a complete game from your team."

Weirton hosts Toronto today at 6 p.m. while Richmond begins play in the Coshocton Tournament.

"We have this tournament this weekend and if we don't play better than we have the past couple of games we're going to be in trouble," said Davis.
