Darren Lee Owens

OWENS, Darren Lee, 50, of Onsted, Michigan, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, July 29, 2012, at St. Vincent's Hospital in Toledo, Ohio.

He was born on May 11, 1962, in Weirton, West Virginia, the son of Leslie and Audrey (Martin) Owens.

Darren graduated from Buckeye North High School in Brilliant, OH, in 1980, and Akron University with a bachelors of science in mechanical engineering in 1986.

He married Bonnie Laurie McDonough on Nov. 30, 1985, in Barberton, OH at Johnson United Methodist Church.

Darren worked all around the world building power generation plants using coal, gas and wind turbines. He worked for Ohio Edison, which later became First Energy, Black and Veatch, and Consumers Energy.

His interest and hobbies were just as varied, he enjoyed trap shooting, flying lessons, motorcycles, woodworking, sailing his hobie cat, talking on his amateur radio, travel, and his favorite was watching his children play sports.

Darren is survived by his wife, Bonnie; son, Zachary and fiancee, Leslie Meissner; daughter, Caitlyn, and fiance, Steven Smith all of Onsted; mother, Audrey Owens; sister, Melissa Owens; nephew, Brendan Bobo, all of Brilliant, OH; sister-in-law, Terry (Delmer) Nelson of Norton, OH; and brothers-in-law, John (Paula) McDonough of Norton, OH and Dean (Linda) McDonough of Copley, OH; uncles, Gerald (Mary) Owens of Walla Walla, Washington, and Selwyn (Hazel) Martin of Carrollton, OH; aunts, Dorrine (Merriel) Burkhead of Sebring, OH, and Karen (Paul) Scott of Brilliant, OH; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Darren was preceded in death by his father.

Funeral services for Darren will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 4, 2012, at the Dunn Chapel, Brown-Van Hemert Funeral Home in Onsted with Pastor Richard Mortimer officiating. Cremation will follow.

Visitation will be held on Friday, August 3, 2012 from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, donations are being accepted for the Darren L. Owens Scholarship Fund.
