Steubenville Police

Questions: A man walking in the 800 block of North Sixth Street said he heard three people talking about a woman he knows and when he asked them about it, claims a female “immediately became angry and told him to keep her name out of his mouth,” Monday. He said he then referred to that woman by a derogatory term several times and said at one point, “she pulled out a pocketknife … and told him she’d cut him if he came near her.” Police said the woman confirmed she had been standing on the sidewalk talking with two people when the man “interjected himself into their conversation.” She said she told him she “didn’t know him or why he was talking to her” and said he called her the derogatory term several times “and kept following her as she tried to leave,” so she took the knife out of her pocket but said she never opened the blade though she did warn him that, if he cane near her, she “has a right to defend myself.” They were advised to avoid each other.

Bottled up: Police said a disturbance in the 100 block of McDowell Avenue involved two people “arguing over matters related to past relationships,” Monday. During the ensuing argument the male knocked the television off the wall, and she threw a bottle at him, hitting him in the face. Police said he did have a bump on his forehead and his lip seemed to be split open, and he told them he thought one of his front teeth had been knocked loose. She said he’d “knocked all the items off the wall, including the television” and said she didn’t know anything about him being injured and if he had been, it wasn’t her fault. When police asked her to leave the residence, she warned him she was going to be going to jail and he “began pleading with (police), begging (them) not to take his wife to jail.” He said he wasn’t going to pursue charges.

Pulling punches: A police caller described as “fairly intoxicated” reported being assaulted in the 100 block of North Sixth Street, Monday. The caller said he confronted another male about drug use, and they ended up “in each others’ face” and the other man punched him. The other man said the caller “got up in his face” but denied throwing a punch. Police said the caller had called for an ambulance, then refused to go with them.

Fraud: A Lawson Avenue business told police a bogus company has been using his address on Google, and when he reported it, Google removed his business page instead of the fraudulent information, Monday. He said he tried to contact the company at the number listed and said he spoke with “Several subjects who refused to provide information and eventually refused to answer.” Police advised him to contact the FBI fraud reporting site through ic3.gov. Detectives said the number had been ported through Intelliquent and wasn’t a real phone number and the business it goes back to is not registered in the state of Ohio as a business.

Trashy: People have been dumping their personal trash into business trash bins, Monday. Police collected the names of several individuals believed to be involved.

Code issue: Notice of violation was sent to the owner/occupants of a property at 423 N. Seventh St., large pile of garbage allegedly stored behind detached garage and home, trash and junk in front yard and on porch.

Cat burglars: A Toronto area resident reported his cat was missing after his new washer and dryer were delivered, Sunday. He said they were in and out “quite a few times” while they were at his house and at first he thought his cat might have hidden in the box. He said the cat had been missing for several hours and “it is unlike (it) not to come back in this weather.” He said he contacted the business and was able to speak with the delivery drivers but they “did not speak very good English” and implied they might have stolen his cat. He called back later to report the cat had shown up on his porch.

Taking shortcuts: A parent reported a juvenile being unruly, Monday. He said he’d told his son he needed to clean his room “properly” before playing video games but when he got home from school all he did was “shove everything under his bed.” He wanted his video games and when his father refused, he “began to destroy his bedroom” and was disruptive. Deputies spoke with the child about his behavior and parental expectations.

Off course: A Mingo Junction woman reported a tractor-trailer had become stuck in her yard, damaging it, Monday. Deputies said a driver hauling two sand boxes had followed his GPS to Gould’s but he wasn’t able to make it to the underpass, so he backed up and got stuck.

Hazardous: A man trying to repair a railroad crossing arm stuck in the down position said a motorist traveling at a too-high speed almost hit him, Monday. He said the red crossing lights were flashing
