A taste of the island foods

Stephanie Ujhelyi GET A TASTE – Conja Guastella, also known as Pastor Queen, prepared a curry chicken dinner for a customer at King Jesus Cafe in Newell.

NEWELL – “O taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the man that trusteth in him” – Psalms 34:8

On the streets of the small, unincorporated town of Newell is a hidden jewel.

For almost a year, East Liverpool resident Conja Guastella has operated King Jesus Cafe, which provides a taste of the island foods.

Diners who frequent the dining establishment appreciate the quaint and hometown flavors offered by Guastella, also known as Pastor Queen.

Located at 501 Washington St., once walking through the doors, customers quickly get that hometown, intimate feel like they are dining at her home.

With jerk and curry favorites on the menu, some of the most popular dishes are her oxtail, island hibachi, as well as various other Jamaican meat and vegetable dishes.

Beef, pork, chicken and goat selections are available as well as fish.

In addition, diners often add on side orders of coco bread, macaroni and cheese or the overwhelming favorite, yellow rice seasoned with turmeric.

The majority of her dinners include fresh vegetables.

A favorite — especially during Lent — is her red snapper.

King Jesus Cafe offers dine-in, pickup or delivery service through DoorDash or Uber Eats, although she is contemplating adding her own delivery driver.

For more information, call 304-459-3035. The cafe is open 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mondays through Fridays.
