East Springfield to hold dinner

EAST SPRINGFIELD — The East Springfield Community Center will hold its final dinner of the season from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday. The center is located on state Route 39 next to the firehouse. The public is invited to attend the fundraising dinner, with proceeds going back into the center. The menu will consist of roast pork loin, mashed potatoes and gravy, green beans, bread, dessert and a drink for $11. Guests can dine in or place a carryout order by calling (740) 543-3700.

Church to honor Brown on anniversary

WEIRTON — The Morning Star Baptist church in Weirton will celebrate the sixth anniversary of its pastor, the Rev. James E. Brown, on Sunday.

Those scheduled to help honor Brown will be the Rev. Floyd Palmer, who will deliver the 11 a.m. message; and the Rev. Michael D. Rhue and his congregation from the United Vision Baptist Church of Pittsburgh. Rhue will deliver the special 3 p.m. sermon.

SOAR to meet

WEIRTON — Local SOAR members and their guests will meet from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 16 at Mario’s restaurant in Weirton. An election of officers has been placed on the agenda. A light luncheon will be served. Those planning to attend should make a reservation by Monday by calling (304) 797-9785.

Crochet club to meet

WELLSBURG — The Brooke County Public Library’s Crochet Club will meet at noon Oct. 16.

The group is for adults who are beginners through experts.

Participants should bring their own supplies and projects to work on, organizers said.

FOLLANSBEE — The Follansbee Library will show the rated PG-13 film “The Boogeyman,” based on a story by Stephen King, at noon on Oct. 18. Attendees can bring a lunch. St. Stephen’s to hold yard sale

STEUBENVILLE — St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church will hold its annual yard sale from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 19 in the parking lot area behind the church, located at 284 Lovers Lane.

There are plenty of vendor spaces still available, organizers announced. Officials stressed there are to be no clothing, shoes, pillows, blankets or books sold during this event. Items to be brought include clean, working lamps; mirrors, paintings, decorations and knickknacks. There will be no restroom facilities on the site to use, officials added. Book club to meet

WELLSBURG — The Brooke County Public Library Book Club will meet in person and virtually at 5 p.m. Oct. 24. The club will discuss Ruth Ann Musick’s, “The Telltale Lilac Bush and Other West Virginia Ghost Tales.” Participants attending will receive the title of the next book they will discuss. Election Day luncheon set

BRILLIANT — The Brilliant United Methodist Church will hold its Election Day soup and sandwich sale Nov. 5. The church, located at 525 LaBelle St., will be open during lunchtime, officials noted.

The menu will consist of chicken noodle, vegetable beef, broccoli and cheese or bean soups. A bowl will cost $2.50; a pint, $3.50 and a quart, $7.

Sandwiches that will be offered include meatball hoagies, $5; hot turkey, $4; sloppy joe, $3; and hot dogs, $2. The church will sell drinks, desserts and side dishes. Carryout will be available for those who do not dine inside. Call (740) 598-4472 to place the order.

Panel to discuss women in sports

PITTSBURGH — The Western Pennsylvania Sports Museum, located at the Heinz History Center, will explore the evolution and rise of women’s sports with a panel of athletes, coaches and industry experts from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Oct. 22.

The program “Game Changers: Women and Sport,” features panelists sharing their experiences, examining major trends, including leadership opportunities, viewership of women’s athletics and equity in marketing, media, sponsorship and pay. Speakers will include panelists Suzie McConnell Serio, NCAA All-American, WNBA star, coach and Olympic medalist; Teresa Conn, co-owner and coach of the Pittsburgh Passion; Caroline Fitzgerald, women’s sports industry expert and CEO and founder of GOALS; and Alfreeda Goff, a pioneering coach and administrator who has dedicated 40 years to intercollegiate athletics. Together, the foursome will share challenges and triumphs they have faced during their careers. The panel will be moderated by Anne Madarasz, director of the Western Pennsylvania Sports Museum. The program is being held in conjunction with the History Center’s exhibit “A Woman’s Place: How Women Shaped Pittsburgh,” featuring a section on women athletes and game changers from Western Pa.

The cost is $10 for non-members and $5 for history center members. Admission is free for students who have a valid ID. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and admission includes access to History Center and Sports Museum exhibitions. To purchase tickets, visit heinzhistorycenter.org/events.
