Church Women United helping community
Those at the First Christian Church in Weirton are helping community residents. A Christmas meeting of the Disciples Women is planned for 6 p.m. Dec. 5 in the church fellowship hall. The speaker will be Francine Hauldren, chairman of the American 250 Committee of the Fort Steuben Daughters of the American Revolution. Hauldren will explain how she is involving schools in the celebration of America’s birthday. The service project will be to help Weirton’s Comfort House, a child advocacy center that provides a multi-disciplinary approach to allegations of abuse and neglect of children. The group will collect stuffed animals, coloring books and colored pencils to help the children feel safe. All women are invited to attend and participate in the project. Disciple Women officers include from left, Connie Norwood, Karen Blanc, Carol Skerbetz, Janet Rymer and Susan Brown. For information, call the church at (304) 797-7300. The church responded to a plea from the Community Bread Basket, seeking cans of corn. Cathie Yeager, outreach chair of the church, responded. With help from the congregation, and its pastor, the Rev. Mark Mayer, Yeager and Harry Yeager delivered 200 cans to the agency. Anyone wanting to assist the nonprofit can reach the facility at (304) 748-7595.
