Truck traffic concerns get raised in Wellsburg
WELLSBURG — Wellsburg Council may consider an ordinance prohibiting large truck traffic on certain streets, but Mayor Dan Dudley would like the panel to hear first from a local industry that would be affected.
Dudley told council on Tuesday representatives of Eagle Manufacturing plan to attend council’s May 13 meeting to discuss concerns that have been raised about large trucks using 25th and 26th streets.
Fourth Ward Councilman Charlie Harris has suggested closing portions of the streets to truck traffic and there are plans to draw up a proposed ordinance for that purpose.
Harris said trucks have struck a utility pole in that area several times in recent months, and at times have brought utility lines down, disrupting service for residents.
He said private property also has been damaged by the trucks and he has stepped out of his home to guide their drivers in an effort to prevent further damage.
Harris said the city has a responsibility to ensure the safety and welfare of its residents.
Third Ward Councilman Randy Fletcher said 25th and 26th streets aren’t part of the designated route for trucks traveling to businesses in the city’s east side.
On Tuesday, he told council he has ordered No Truck Traffic signs for the two streets.
Dudley asked council to hear first from officials from Eagle Manufacturing, which has headquarters at 25th and Charles streets.
“I think we still need to let them talk and hear what they have to say. I think it’s only fair,” he said.
Dudley said he doesn’t feel an ordinance needs to be drawn up until then but was told one could be prepared for council’s consideration at the May 13 meeting.
“We can decide whether we want to vote on it, but I’d like to hear from Eagle,” he said.
Representatives of Eagle Manufacturing couldn’t be reached for comment.
In related business, resident Mary Blum complained about large trucks being parked in the center turn lane of state Route 2, where other businesses also operate.
