STELLA WESTLAKE

Stella E. Westlake, 92, of Toronto, OH, passed away Monday, March 17, 2025 in the Valley Hospice Care Center in Steubenville, OH.

Stella was born August 21, 1932, in Steubenville, daughter of the late Herman and Mary Ann (Popko) Pawelczyk.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, James C. ‘Jim’ Westlake in 2009, her daughter, Mary Kay Westlake in February of 2025; six brothers, Stanley, Herman, Walter, Paul, Cas and Alex, and two sisters, Sarah Rujak and Theresa Petroski.

She was an active member of the St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church, in Toronto, and the Catholic Women’s Club, where she was a former Historian and Secretary. Stella helped with the nut-roll fundraisers and sang in the choir for numerous funeral masses.

After high school, Stella worked for a few years at Weirton Steel, where she met her husband Jim, and in the circulation dept. at the Steubenville Herald Star. Stella was also a former member of the Knoxville VFD Auxiliary, having spent many years helping with Bingo, and the former Toronto Jr. Civics Club.

Stella leaves behind her daughter, Christine (James) Flowers, and her son, James (Kendra) Westlake, both of Toronto; three grandchildren, TW Tolman (fiance Taylor Tsesmilles, Christina Westlake and Joseph Westlake; brother, John Pawelczyk of Steubenville, and sister, Margie Swartzmiller of New Cumberland, WV, several nieces, nephews, and greats, and her beloved dog, Abbey.

A Funeral Liturgy with Mass will be held Friday, March 21 at 12 noon at the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Toronto. Fr. Thomas Vennitti will celebrate, and burial will follow in the Toronto Union Cemetery.

Family and friends will be received in the rear of the church from 10:30 am to noon prior to Mass.
