Spotlight will shine on area restaurants
Area residents should take the opportunity to pick up a meal or two next week from a local restaurant.
Weirton Restaurant Week begins Sunday, with more than 20 local establishments set to take part with offers of special, limited-time menu items and discounts for all to enjoy.
The event was organized by the Top of West Virginia Convention and Visitors Bureau and the Weirton Area Chamber of Commerce as a way to highlight some of the many locally owned restaurants and eateries available in the Tri-State Area, and to encourage residents and visitors to get out and support local business.
According to officials with the organizations, the winter season often sees lower patronage of restaurants, as colder weather discourages people from going out.
It was originally scheduled for early February but was postponed as a result of the water issues in Weirton. While a conservation order remains in place, there are no longer any widespread boil orders for the city, which, hopefully, will lead to people being more willing to get out and sample some of what the region’s restaurants have to offer.
More than 20 food-related businesses have signed on for this inaugural event, offering specials on breakfasts, lunch deals, unique food items, drinks, desserts and more. Those who dine at participating restaurants in the coming week also will have the chance to have their names entered into prize drawings.
Every community has its favorite restaurants, places that set them apart from others and help to draw attention. That magic can be found in a special food item not available elsewhere, something that has a connection to the history of the region or anything that holds a place in the hearts of residents.
This is a chance to explore the area and learn more about the cuisine available, a reminder to dine locally at locally owned businesses. It offers an opportunity to try a new place or a new dish. Most important, it’s a chance to enjoy a couple of hours out, whether by yourself or with friends or family.
Restaurant weeks have become popular around the country as a way to promote local businesses. With the continuing support of the convention and visitors bureau and chamber, as well as participation of local restaurants, it’s a promotion that seems positioned to have a successful future.
