OVAC soccer tournament field is set

STEUBENVILLE — Four local high schools have their boys and girls soccer teams competing this week in the annual OVAC Soccer Tournament.

The tournament is scheduled to get underway today.

The higher seed will host the games in the quarterfinals and the semifinals.

In Class 5A, Big Red and Brooke have both teams competing in the tournament, Weir and Oak Glen have both teams competing in Class 4A and Catholic Central has both teams competing in Class 1A-3A.

Starting on the boys side of things, the top six in each class qualified for the tournament with the top two seeds in each class earning byes in the first round.

Big Red is the No. 3 seed in Class 5A, and Brooke is the No. 6 seed. Big Red is scheduled to take on the Bruins in the quarterfinals at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday night on Reno Saccoccia Field inside Harding Stadium. Big Red defeated the Bruins, 8-3, last Tuesday night at home

University –the No. 4 seed — is scheduled to take on No. 5 seed Parkersburg South at 5 p.m. Tuesday at home in the other semifinal.

Wheeling Park (9-2) is the No. 1 seed in the class, while Morgantown is the No. 2 seed. Wheeling Park will play the lowest remaining seed in the semifinals Thursday, while Morgantown will play the highest remaining seed.

Three local teams will also be competing in Class 4A with Harrison Central, Weir and Oak Glen all making the cut. The Huskies are the No. 2 seed, the Red Riders are the No. 3 seed, while Oak Glen is the No. 6 seed.

The teams from Hancock County will meet for the second time this season as the Red Riders will take on the Golden Bears at 6 p.m. Monday inside Jimmy Carey Stadium. Weir won the first match, 2-1, last Tuesday.

In the other semifinal, No. 5 seed East Liverpool is slated to play No. 4 seed St. Clairsville at 5 p.m. Monday down at Red Devil Stadium.

Beaver Local, the No. 1 seed, and Harrison Central received byes. the Beavers will play the lowest remaining seed in the semifinals Thursday, while the Huskies will take on the highest remaining seed.

Catholic Central earned the No. 2 seed in Class 1A-3A meaning the Crusaders received a bye in the first round. Wheeling Central is the No. 1 seed.

The quarterfinals are slated to be held Tuesday. In the first one, No. 4 seed Linsly will play No. 5 seed Wood County at 5 p.m. on the road, while No. 3 seed Trinity Christian will play No. 6 seed Caldwell at 5:30 p.m. Friday at home.

Wheeling Central will play the lowest remaining seed in the semifinals Thursday, while Catholic Central will play the highest remaining seed.

On the girls side, Big Red earned the No. 2 seed in Class 5A, while Brooke is the No. 5 seed. Brooke and University tied in the rankings, but the Bruins received the higher seed after the format tiebreaker was applied.

Morgantown is the No. 1 seed and both it and Big Red received byes in the first round.

In the quarterfinals, Brooke will play Wheeling Park at 5 p.m. on the road, while No. 3 seed Parkersburg South will tale on No. 6 seed University at 6:30 p.m. at home.

The Mohigans will play the lowest remaining seed in the semifinals Thursday, while Big Red will take on the highest remaining seed.

Three local teams — Weir, Oak Glen and Indian Creek — qualified for the tournament in Class 4A.

Top-seeded Weir and St. Clairsville, the No. 2 seed, received byes in the first round. Oak Glen is the No. 4 seed in the tournament, while Indian Creek is the No. 6 seed.

East Liverpool, the No. 5 seed, is slated to take on Oak Glen at 5 p.m. Tuesday on the road in the first semifinal, while Indian Creek is set to take on No. 3 seed Beaver Local at 7 p.m. on the road in the second semifinal. The Golden Bears and Potters tied 1-1 in their match earlier this season at Oak Glen, while the Beavers shut out the Redskins, 7-0, early in the season at home.

The Red Riders will play the lowest remaining seed in the semifinals Thursday, while the Red Devils will play the highest remaining seed.

Indian Creek does not have a boys team this season.

Class 1A-3A is different from the other five classes due to there only only being four schools in the class, meaning all four have qualified for the tournament.

Catholic Central, the lone local team in the class, earned the No. 2 seed in the class. Wheeling Central is the No. 1 seed.

In the semifinals, Catholic Central will play No. 3 seed Linsly at 5 p.m. Wednesday at home at the Tony Recinella Soccer Field, while No. 4 seed Magnolia will play Wheeling Central at 7:30 p.m. on the road.

The Crusaders tied the Cadets, 1-1, in their matchup earlier this season on the road.

The boys finals will be held Saturday down at Wheeling Island Stadium. The 5A final is set for 10 a.m., the 1A-3A final is set for noon and the 4A final is set for 2 p.m.

The girls finals will be held Saturday down at Red Devil Stadium. The 1A-3A final is set for 10 a.m., the 4A final is set for noon and the 5A final is slated for 2 p.m.
