Weir continues to have entire line up going

Red Riders overcome slow start to top Edison, stay unbeaten

RICHMOND — In winning its first five games, Weir High had been in control of those games most of the way, winning each by the run rule.

Monday night at Edison, the Red Riders ran into a little bit of adversity for the first time — something veteran coach John Leary was eager to see how his team would respond to.

Safe to say, the response was the one he had hoped for.

After falling behind 1-0 in the bottom of the second, the Red Riders responded right away to take a 2-1 lead in the top of the third and did not look back, scoring the game’s final seven runs to stay unbeaten with a 7-1 victory.

“That was really something I wanted to see, how we would respond to a little adversity,” Leary said. “It kind of gave us a little jolt, it’s good to face a little adversity and see how you handle it. I’m real proud of the response.

“This is a big win for us, too, in the OVAC (standings). Edison is always a good team and a challenge, they pounded us the last couple times we came out here so it was nice to come out here and get a win.”

Leading 4-1 going to the seventh, the Red Riders tacked on three more for some added insurance, including a two-run Brayley Lash homer. That blast to right center, her first of the season, gave the Red Riders a homer in each of their last five games. Lash finished with three hits and five RBIs.

They’ve hit 10 homers on the season so far coming from six different players.

“Everybody is contributing, every game it’s a different person,” Leary said. “The kids have great attitudes and are supporting each other and that’s the stuff you like to see. We’ve had a homer in every game but the first one, and every game its someone different hitting them.

“That is Brayley’s first one. It’s nice to know you have that power in your line up, to know that at any point, anyone in the line up can hit one over the fence. It’s a good thing to know you’ve got.”

The added insurance, while nice to have, was not all that necessary because Eliza Utt was dealing in the circle. After giving up the early run, she put up five-straight zeros and finished with a complete game effort, striking out seven.

“I’m real proud of Eliza, she pitched a really good game,” Leary said. “They had a couple hard hit balls off her and she dialed right back in, kept hitting her spots by and large and was just real strong.”

For the Wildcats, who dropped to 4-4, the Red Riders high-powered line up was hard to keep down after the good start.

Edison pitcher All Shrieve also tossed a complete game, striking out nine. Three of the runs against her were unearned.

“They have a very good line up for sure and a very good pitcher, they have a very nice team this year,” Edison head coach McKenzie Morrison said of Weir. “Playing a team like that will make us better down the road. We like playing Weir because they’re always a challenge to compete with.”

Edison struck first when Leighanne Anderson’s sac fly gave them a 1-0 lead, bringing home Gracie Day, who had tripled.

In the top of the next inning, after a walk and an error put two Red Riders on, Lash put Weir on top with a two-run single, which ended up being all the offense they would need.

Utt’s RBI single in the fourth made it 3-1, then Lash sent an RBI double to left in the fifth to make it 4-1 before the three run seventh provided the final margin. Zoey Spencer had an RBI single before Lash’s bomb in the seventh.

“We’ve got a lot of positive things going on right now and we’ve got to keep that going,” Leary said.
